Parking and Student Vehicles

Vehicle Registration

All vehicles on Lake Erie College property are required to be always registered and display the appropriate permit. Vehicle registration must be completed within the first week of the semester. Faculty and staff acquire permits at the Bursars’ office (Cashier window), students may obtain parking permits at Security or the Student Experience Office.  Parking permits for the Tower are issued by the Tower Leasing Staff and obtained through the Leasing Office of the Tower.  Effective beginning the 2025-2026 Academic year, parking permits will be issued and will remain in effect for the term of the   When registering a vehicle, the following information will be requested: Contact information for the vehicle user, make, model, color and license plate number of vehicle.

Cost for a parking permit: Student parking fees are included in their student fees and are at no additional cost.  Fees for Faculty/Staff Parking permits are currently waived by the President of Lake Erie College.

Parking on Campus

The College assumes no responsibility for lost or stolen items or damages to vehicles while parked on college property. Vehicle owners are required to maintain adequate insurance coverage as required by the State of Ohio.

The College has color coded parking spaces.  White spaces are for Faculty, Staff and Visitor parking only.  Yellow spaces are for registered student parking.  Students are not permitted to park in white, Faculty - Staff - Visitor spaces.  Student violators may ne ticketed for the violation.

Authorized parking areas have been strategically located throughout the main campus and at the Equestrian Center. Refer to the map of authorized parking areas. Since parking is at a premium, you are encouraged to allow adequate time to locate a space prior to your on-campus start time.

The maximum speed permitted on college property is 15 mph. A reduced speed is required in all parking lot areas for the protection of pedestrians and residential students. Inclement weather also warrants a reduction in speed and extra caution.

All members of the College community are required to operate vehicles with due regard for the general safety of persons and property. Reckless operation of a motor vehicle on College property is a violation of the College parking policy and may result in a criminal misdemeanor issued by the Painesville City Police.

Parking Rules and Citations

TRAFFIC AND PARKING VIOLATIONS INCLUDE, BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO, THE FOLLOWING:

  • Parking in a handicapped space without legal permit
  • Parking in a loading, service or fire zone
  • Parking in a space marked “Reserved or for Visitor” (white spaces)
  • Parking on the grass or gravel areas
  • Parking in a Faculty/Staff parking space without designated permit (white spaces)
  • Parking in Residential lot without designated permit
  • Parking outside of a marked or designated parking space
  • Blocking a walkway or driveway
  • Failure to display a valid parking permit
  • Parking an oversized vehicle, boat or trailer without obtaining prior approval from Security.
  • Parking in a fire lane or tow away zone.
  • Failure to obey security officers.
  • Failure to fully stop at a stop sign or to yield where signage indicates.
  • Failure to obey all College directional signage.
  • Swapping out or loaning permits is strictly prohibited.

ABSOLUTELY NO DRIVING IS PERMITTED ON PATHS. THIS INCLUDES IN FRONT OF CAMPUS BUILDINGS AND RESIDENCE HALLS.

Violators of this policy may be assessed fines and may lose their parking privileges.

FINES

Vehicles in violation of College traffic and parking regulations are subject to being issued a parking ticket, which will result in fines and could result in the towing of the vehicle from campus.

Fines for violations during any academic year are:

$10.00 - 1st offense

$25.00 - 2nd offense

$50.00 - 3rd and all subsequent offenses

Fines are due and payable fifteen (15) days following the date of original citation.

For those individuals who receive multiple parking violation, those individuals shall be referred for judicial disciplinary measures as outlined on page 255 of this handbook.

TOWING

The College reserves the right to tow any vehicle in violation of college parking and traffic rules, vehicles parked blocking trash dumpsters and vehicles with unpaid parking fines. The College accepts no responsibility for any costs or damages associated with towing. Once towed, vehicle retrieval is the sole responsibility of the vehicle owner.  Information concerning the locations of a towed vehicle can be obtained at the Security Office.

APPEALING A CITATION

A citation may be appealed for good reasons provided a written statement is received at the Security Office no later than seven (7) days following the date of the citation. The Parking Appeals Committee will meet on a timely basis to review appeals. All decisions of the Appeals Committee are considered final.

VISITOR AND OVERNIGHT PARKING

Invited guests, including guests who are visiting residential students, will be required to display a temporary parking permit while on campus. This permit is usually issued for the time the visitor will be on campus, usually not to exceed three (3) days.  Temporary parking permits can be obtained by visiting the Security office, located in Holden Center room 110.

In the event it is necessary for any vehicle to remain on campus overnight, prior approval must be received from Security to avoid towing.

TRAILER PARKING

All trailers are required to be registered with Security.  Every border is allowed to park one registered horse trailer per stall rental at the Equestrian Center.  Students who choose to board at another facility may rent a trailer space at the Equestrian Center trailer lot for a $25 weekly fee. Faculty and Staff may also rent trailer space for a $25 weekly fee.  Any trailer larger than a two - horse trailer will be charged an additional $50 fee each month.

TOWER PARKING

Parking at the Tower is controlled by the Leasing Company.  All students are required to have a Tower parking permit.  The Leasing Company has posted signs that parking in the Tower lot is by permit only and that they may resort to towing vehicles not issued Tower parking permits.  Guests and visitors should utilize parking spaces located along N. Park Pl. and S. Park Pl., the roadways on either side of Veteran’s Park.  Parking enforcement at the Tower is under the control of the leasing manager and the Painesville Police.
