The Master of Educational Leadership (MEL) program at Lake Erie College is a fully online, 34-credit graduate degree designed to prepare experienced educators for administrative roles and eligibility for principal licensure in Ohio. Approved by the Ohio Department of Higher Education, the program aligns with the Ohio Standards for Principals and the National Educational Leadership Preparation (NELP) standards. Students engage in coursework focused on instructional leadership, school law, data-informed decision-making, and organizational management, along with embedded field experiences. Upon successful completion, graduates are recommended to the Ohio Department of Education and are eligible to sit for the Ohio Assessment for Educators (OAE) 015 in Educational Leadership, a key requirement for obtaining a principal license in grade bands PreK-6, 4-9, or 5-12.
Master of Educational Leadership Admissions Criteria:
• Undergraduate GPA of 3.0.
• A satisfactory score on the Graduate Record Examination is required for all applicants with less than a 3.00 grade point average in their undergraduate work. A verbal score of 440 and quantitative score of 500 is required.
• Hold or be eligible for any teaching certificate or license issued by the Ohio Department of Education (except for coaching track)
Transfer Credits M.Ed.
At the time of application as a degree-seeking student to the MEL program, a student may request approval to transfer up to six (6) credits of graduate study from an accredited institution of higher education.
Consideration for transfer credit to meet core requirements will be based upon work in equivalent courses to those required. Elective transfer credit may be accepted when approved by the Dean of Education.
• Credits will be accepted that allow the student to complete the program in 7 (seven) years from the first class taken
• Only credits in which a grade of “B” or better has been earned will be considered for transfer
• Only recognized comparable catalog coursework will be accepted from other institutions
Educational Leadership Portfolio Assignment
Purpose:
The purpose of this assignment is to demonstrate your growth and development as an educational leader by showcasing your academic, professional, and personal achievements during your time in the program. The portfolio should highlight your unique qualities, skills, and abilities, and show how you have used these to contribute to your field of study.
Guidelines:
The portfolio should be aligned to the National Building Level Standards (NELP)
All sections should be well-organized, clearly written, and free of errors.
You may include any relevant supporting materials, such as transcripts, letters of recommendation, or samples of your work, to supplement your written description.
The portfolio should be submitted to your program advisor by the assigned due date.
Successful passing of the portfolio assessment is required to earn the Master of Educational Leadership degree.
