Data Science, B.S.

Return to {$returnto_text} Return to: Undergraduate Academic Majors

The Data Science program begins with two foundational Data Analytics Core courses, shared with the Business Analytics program, introducing students to data manipulation and data visualization using spreadsheets. Moving forward, students learn Python and use cutting-edge machine learning to create predictive models and work with unstructured data.

This program provides a deep focus on predictive modeling and AI systems such as Large Language Models (LLMs) and is technically rigorous.  It is deliberately smaller than many other programs in Data Science to allow students to pursue their own interests in a the liberal arts, and consider how their newfound understanding of data might shape the way they look at problems in other fields. This is done in a reduced course load by focusing on high-demand technical specializations in upper-level courses: Machine Learning and Large Language Models. Its design has benefited form over three years of continuous refinement, incorporating valuable feedback from instructors, students, curriculum committees, and extensive testing of a prior version of the program.

Rize Courses

Lake Erie College participates in the Lower Cost Models Consortium (LCMC) supported by Rize.  Some courses in this major will utilize online course content offered through the LCMC.  Students will be able to identify online courses offered through the LCMC by the “RZ” designator after the course number (for example, CSC 101 RZ).
